About me...

Hello! My name is Riley Kate Higgins, and I am a Senior at Harpeth Hall in the AP Art and Design Program. The works you see under the Portfolio tab are all a part of my sustained investigation. All of the pieces in my investigation were created during the 2022-2023 school year.

Practice, Experimentation, and Revision...

Initially, I worked with the inquiry of “How do places affect me?” This felt constrictive until I expanded my sustained investigation to include memory and mentality as well as expressions of physicality. After this expansion, I began to experiment with how I portray places both through subject and the physical collage elements. This opened the door for more expressive stylistic choices especially in composition surrounding collage.

With my last few pieces, I worked to add synthesis in both idea and style to my portfolio. Looking back on what I had created in the first few months, I wanted to add onto some pieces I thought worked especially well. This act of revising and critiquing my own work led to some of my favorite pieces in my portfolio. I was able to expand on my investigation and stretch my questions in order to express my ideas. Generally, my thoughts settle on how I think about a place or how a place makes me feel. I used color choices and some contrasting styles in order to create the mood of each piece.

Sources of Inspiration...

I found inspiration in modern artists from not only their pieces but also their greater ideas about the purpose of their art. Nicholas Martin’s idea and expression of “intimate interiors” really resonated with me. Martin speaks of the freedom of color and line in his works and how these two elements work to convey the intimacy or soft quietness of a setting. I took this idea and related it to my own work stylistically as well as ideologically.

Taking intimacy and focus to all environments, I found inspiration in Sarah Webb’s landscapes and sunsets. I really appreciate Webb’s unique ability to use clean realism while still creating nostalgia or mood within a scene. She focuses very intently on light and composition. I took her ideas and emphasized realism’s contrast with leaving the impression of line and color. For my final pieces, composition taking into account the contrast of light became integral in my process and style.
